Ophthalmologists with IVV have been volunteering at the hospital since 1996. IVV built a free standing eye hospital on the main hospital campus in 2001. The eye hospital has a very good reputation in Zambia. It has some of the best equipment of any hospital in Zambia. Teams of eye surgeons volunteer an average 5 times per year. Eye doctors are hard to find in Zambia. Many patients travel very long distances to get to the eye hospital. The patients often camp at the hospital for several days while waiting to be treated. During their 2 weeks visits, over 600 patients will be seen in the clinic. They perform an average of 125 eye operations during their visits.
